Please join us in Professor Zhe-Xi Luo's Lab of Paleontology at the University of Chicago for a 'Show and Tell' of how to study tiny fossils with modern tools, followed by a talk over lunch about "The Rise of the Early Mammals through the Age of Dinosaurs". Dr. Luo has spent his career shedding light on the evolutionary relationships, functional adaptations, ecological diversification, and developmental patterns of ancient mammals, including the world's earliest-known placentals and marsupials. He seeks to understand the origins of mammals by studying mammal fossils of the Mesozoic Age -- the Age of Dinosaurs.
Dr. Luo received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, his B.S from Nanjing University of China, and was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University. He later became Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology and Associate Director of Research at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, and is a current research associate of the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh. He has received numerous awards, including a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation and a Humboldt Award for Senior Scientists from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany.
Dr. Luo is passionate about promoting public understanding of science, offering museum tours and talks, and contributing to scientific journals and TV documentaries. He has been serving on the Advisory Board of the Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC since 2019.
A box lunch is included in the event fee.
